Last night, a series of cowardly and murderous terrorist attacks targeted France and caused a large number of casualties. Our first thoughts go to the victims of these vile actions and their loved ones. The President of the French Republic has declared a state of emergency on the entire French territory, and an extraordinary Government meeting was held yesterday evening. A period of three days of national mourning has been decreed, starting today 13.00, French time.
A special telephone number has been set up within the French interministerial Unit for aid to the victims. People with relatives in Paris who wish to obtain information can call the following number: 00 33 1 45 50 34 60.
In view of the seriousness of the situation, all French institutions, including the French Embassy in Cyprus, are mobilized.
I spoke this morning with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cyprus, who offered his condolences and the solidarity of the Cypriot authorities. At my request, the Cypriot police forces are mobilized to ensure the safety of the the French buildings and interests in Cyprus. The French Embassy in Cyprus is in permanent contact with the French authorities in Paris and the Cypriot institutions to see to the safety of our citizens. We call on our compatriots in Cyprus to show increased vigilance and to express their unity and solidarity in the face of terrorism.
The Embassy shall keep the French community informed of all forthcoming security instructions.
I warmly thank all tokens of sympathy, solidarity and support that were sent to me as well as to the Embassy staff by Cypriots, members of the French community or of other foreign communities in Cyprus.
