Harlem Désir, Minister of State for European Affairs, visited Cyprus from February 25 to 26 in order to participate in the 3rd meeting of the foreign ministers of the Mediterranean countries of the European Union (“Med Group”) together with the Cypriot, Spanish, Greek, Italian, Maltese and Portuguese ministers. The Secretary General of the Union for the Mediterranean, Mr. Fathalla Sijilmassi, also participated in the debates.
The discussions mainly focused on the various regional crises, notably in Syria and Libya, as well as on the relations between the EU and Arab countries. A joint communiqué was adopted by the Ministers at the conclusion of the meeting and a press conference took place.

On February, 25th in the afternoon, before joining the Ministerial Med-Group meeting, Harlem Désir took the opportunity of his presence on the island to have bilateral contacts in order to take stock of the inter-communal negotiations and to reaffirm France’s support for the island’s reunification. He was thus received in audience by the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr. Nicos Anastasiades, with whom he also discussed bilateral relations between France and Cyprus. Moreover, the Minister of State met with the leader of the Turkish-Cypriot community, Mr. Mustafa Akinci, and the Special Adviser of the UN Secretary-General on Cyprus, Mr. Espen Barth Eide.
